2017: Hurricanes 83 v Sunwolves 17, Tokyo
The Hurricanes picked up from where they left off in 2016 in style, thrashing the home side the Sunwolves in their inaugural match against them. The Hurricanes were fast out of the blocks en route to taking a 45-5 halftime lead. The tries continued to flow after the interval, but the Japanese side’s previously porous defence finally shored up in the fourth quarter and they also crossed for two late tries. In his 50th game for the Hurricanes, flanker Ardie Savea scored two tries, while his brother Julian crossed for one. Lock Michael Fatialofa and right wing Vince Aso both scored two tries in the 13-try romp at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium.
2017: Hurricanes 71 v Rebels 6, Wellington
The Hurricanes rampant start to 2017 continued when they trounced the Rebels by a record score. Fresh from their biggest ever win against the Sunwolves, the Hurricanes recovered from a sluggish start to run riot. The Hurricanes extended their winning streak to 10 games and by scoring 154 points in two games created a record for the most points scored in consecutive games. The Hurricanes led 31-6 at halftime. Nehe Milner-Skudder joined Julian Savea in scoring a hat-trick against the Rebels. Ngani Laumape ran like a truck to bag a brace and Vince Aso also celebrated a double.
2012 Hurricanes 66 v Rebels 24, Wellington
The Hurricanes routed the Rebels in their biggest home win. Left wing Julian Savea scored a hat trick, fullback Andre Taylor and right wing Alapati Leuia scored two tries each and first five-eighth Beauden Barrett kicked all his 10 shots on goal. The Hurricanes scored five tries in the first half to take a 38-17 lead into halftime, Savea scoring two, fullback Taylor, right wing Leiua and openside flanker Jack Lam all crossing. The Rebels led 10-3 early, but after that it was all one-way traffic for the Hurricanes, whose hard hitting defence was also a feature of the match.
1997 Hurricanes 64 v Northern Transvaal 32, New Plymouth
Going into this third round match the Hurricanes were a desperate side after dropping their opening two games of the year and winning just three of 11 in 1996. Additionally, star fullback Christian Cullen was injured and his replacement Jarrod Cunningham was one of five changes to the starting XV from the week before. Instead of folding, the Hurricanes came out with a new style of ‘ruck and run’ rugby and at the end of 80 minutes a new confidence that propelled them to the semi-finals. They upped their pace and urgency and whipped the Bulls, 64-32, Tana Umaga scored a hat trick. The Hurricanes scored a franchise record 9 tries in the match, a feat they have equalled twice and beaten once.
2014 Hurricanes 60 v Cheetahs 27, Wellington
The Hurricanes celebrated captain Conrad Smith’s 100th Super Rugby match and ignited their 2014 season with this convincing home win. The Hurricanes outscored the Cheetahs nine tries to three in a fast-paced game, racing away to score five tries in the second half after leading 29-20 at halftime. Smith deservedly got on the scoresheet, crossing for the team’s penultimate try late in the match, his 19th Super Rugby try since his debut for the Hurricanes in 2004. Eight players scored tries for the Hurricanes, with Beauden Barrett scoring two tries and landing 13 points off the tee.
1997 Hurricanes 60 v Highlanders 34, Wellington
The biggest win, in terms of points scored against a New Zealand opposition. Wing Tana Umaga scored his second hat-trick of the season. One try was a memorable 75-metre run from inside his 22 and another long-rang intercept try. Umaga’s wing partner Alex Telea and second five-eighth Jason O’Halloran also netted doubles while stand-in kicker Christian Cullen scored a try and kicked six conversions and a penalty for 20 points. This was a Hurricanes record for most number of conversions in a match until Jimmy Gopperth equalled it in 2005. It was also a proud day for Wellington’s Tiatia family - Filo for the Hurricanes and Ace for the Highlanders both scoring tries.
2009 Hurricanes 56 v Brumbies 7, Wellington
The Hurricanes made it an ANZAC Day to remember with a scintillating performance against the horsemen, backs and forwards combining well in scoring several truly memorable tries. After conceding the game's first try to the Brumbies, the Hurricanes stormed to a 25-7 lead inside the opening half hour and grabbed a four-try bonus point before halftime. Tries to Zac Guildford (2), Cory Jane, Conrad Smith, Tamati Ellison, David Smith, Faifili Levave and Victor Vito gave them a historic third consecutive win over against the Brumbies. It was also their 50th Super Rugby win on home territory.
2015 Hurricanes 56 – Highlanders 20, Napier
In honour of 85-game club legend Jerry Collins, the Hurricanes earned a record-breaking 56-20 win over the Highlanders to qualify top for the semi-finals with a week to spare. The win was also their 100th win in Super Rugby match in New Zealand. Victory was dedicated to Collins, who was a Hurricane between 2001 and 2008 and played 48 Tests for the All Blacks. He died with his wife Alana in a car crash in France just hours before kick-off. Fittingly, the first try of the match was scored by blindside flanker Blade Thomson, playing in the jersey that Collins made many of his appearances in. Similarly, Ma’a Nonu, a former teammate of Collins’ for Wellington and the Hurricanes for seven years, came off the bench and scored two tries. Similarly, halfback TJ Perenara, a member of Collins’ Northern United club in Wellington also scored two tries.
2016 Hurricanes 50 – Lions 17, Johannesburg
The Hurricanes ran in seven tries in this win over the Lions in a dress rehearsal for the final that followed three months later. This was their highest score and biggest winning margin over the Lions in 18 previous meetings with the South African club. Julian Savea and Cory Jane both scored two tries each, while Jane and Matt Proctor each scored intercept tries. Prop Reggie Goodes also scored a memorable solo try with a bullocking run up the touchline. The Hurricanes led 36-5 at halftime.
2008 Hurricanes 50 v Bulls 22, Pretoria
The Hurricanes were comprehensive seven tries to three winners over then defending champions the Bulls. At the time this was just the fourth time they had scored 50 points in a Super Rugby match and the first time since 1997, as well as being their most points in a match away from home. The Hurricanes did the damage early, running in their first four tries in just 21 minutes of play and opening up a 28-3 lead with almost three quarters of the game remaining. They were fast out of the blocks, scoring converted tries to Ma’a Nonu (5th minute), Chris Masoe (10th), Conrad Smith (16th) and Nonu again (21st) to leave the Bulls reeling and turn the intimidating Loftus Versfeld Stadium into an amphitheatre of destruction. Nonu punched through a hole in midfield for his first try and collected his double with a 50-metre intercept try under the posts to complete the onslaught.
