The introduction of a Hurricanes Heartland Under 20 team into the Central Region Shield competition and the addition of two new Wellington-based teams to the Under 18 Trustbank Central Secondary Schools Competition are both examples of the continued growth of Hurricanes Youth Rugby in 2017.
From the Heartland Under 20 Development Series, the Hurricanes Youth Rugby Council will be selecting a representative team to play Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu and Wellington in the Under 19 Seeding Tournament for the Central Region Shield.
And in the region’s competition for players in their last year of secondary school, the Centurions Rugby Football Club and the New Zealand Marist Rugby Federation will both be forming teams to contest the Trustbank Central Secondary Schools Shield, currently held by the Wellington Samoan Schools team, who will defend their title in 2017.
In other Council administered competitions, the National Secondary School Semi-Finals and Finals will be played on 26 August 2017 and 2 September 2017 respectively, while the Hurricanes Schools Sevens Tournament will this year be hosted by the Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Football Union, in Masterton, on 28 October 2017.
The Council’s Under 16 Tournament for the Don Broughton Shield and Saracens Cup will this year be hosted by the Wanganui Rugby Football Union from 2 October 2017 to 5 October 2017.
The Council’s 2017 programme gets underway in the first week of Term 2, with three Girls Development Camps being run by the Women's Rugby Regional Development Team scheduled to take place in Wellington (Sunday, 7 May), Manawatu (Sunday, 14 May) and Hawkes Bay (Sunday, 21 May).
