The Wellington Samoans - Festival Cup winners 2017. Can they defend their title?
It’s a quiet but noisy weekend of rugby around the province as the club and college seasons wind to an end and representative rugby fires up in earnest.
Three more titles will be decided tomorrow, with the championship round silverware to be handed out in the First Grade and both divisions of the Under 85kg grade, and two teams are looking to complete undefeated campaigns.
First grade
One of those are the Hutt Old Boys Marist Barbarians who are finally looking to claim the First Grade crown, the Johnsonville Centennium Cup, after missing out in the final the past two years and add it to the first-round Thompson Memorial Trophy they have already taken. The Barbarians are an experienced bunch, epitomised by having Nick Risdon and his 200+ games of Premier rugby steering the ship, but for all their dominance this season will still have to be wary of their opponents. The Stokes Valley Chiefs have had a solid season, but will have to be much better than in their previous meetings against HOBM where they’ve conceded more than 50 points each time and score just a lone try. HOBM easily saw off OBU 58-7 in their semi-final, while Stokes Valley beat titleholders the Petone Brotherhood 36-12 in theirs.
Kick-off at the Hutt Rec is 2.30pm
The other side looking for an unbeaten season are the Avalon Wolves lightweights. Winners already of the JC Bowl, they’ll want to make sure the Paul Potiki Shield sits alongside it in the Fraser Park clubrooms. Looking to spoil that are the Upper Hutt Rams, with the pair fighting out an 18-17 result in the Wolves favour just two weeks ago. A full preview of this match ran here yesterday.
The Division 2 Tony O’Brien Shield final will be played out at Helston Park between Johnsonville and last year’s top division winners Wellington. The pair advanced from last weekend’s semi-finals with wins over Wests and MSP respectively.
Kick-off in both matches is also at 2.30pm.
There is also two more grades in action; the Reserve Grade Division 2 semi-finals pit the Upper Hutt J8’s against the Wests Mixed Veges at Maidstone, while at Evans Bay the MSP Internationals take on first-round winners the Paremata-Plimmerton Punters with the winners moving onto the last match of the club season next week. Also on tomorrow is the annual Presidents Day to conclude their year of social combat, with Paremata-Plimmerton hosting it this year at Ngati Toa Domain.
Its Finals Day at St Pats Silverstream, where all 10 grades and divisions ranging from Premier 2 down to the Under 55kg will be decided. A full preview of that is also available on this website. After that, attention turns to Sunday’s Premiership decider between St Pats Silverstream and St Pats Town at Porirua Park, kick-off 12.40pm.
The local and provincial representative season also gets underway tomorrow. First up is the match between the Centurions and Wellington Maori side at the Hutt Rec at 1pm ahead of the First Grade final, while at 2.30pm the Wellington Samoans take on their Hawkes Bay counterparts at Lyndhurst Park.
Sunday sees the U19s get their qualification for the national tournament in Taupo underway against Manawatu in an 11.30am start at Westpac Stadium, followed at 2.05pm by the Lions as they start the Mitre10 Cup against Otago.
Finally, a mention of the Wellington players involved in the two international matches in Sydney tomorrow. Petone’s Jackie Fereti will come off the bench for the Black Ferns in the Laurie O’Reilly Trophy opener against the Australians, as will Norths’ TJ Perenara and Ories’ Ardie Savea in the Bledisloe Cup contest the follows.
