For the first time in the history of New Zealand sport, a survey is being undertaken on the current state of Amateur Sports Clubs across the country. The survey is being undertaken by the New Zealand Amateur Sport Association (NZ ASA) in partnership with the Sport Leadership & Management Department at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
The Association is inviting 1,000 Amateur Sports Clubs currently registered as Incorporated Societies across 16 different sporting codes to participate in the on-line survey which will be undertaken during September. The survey features questions about Club Membership, Facilities, Management/Governance, Community Involvement and Governing Bodies.
Association Chairman, Gordon Noble-Campbell, says there is growing interest in understanding how effectively Amateur Sports Clubs are continuing to contribute to the social well-being of New Zealand's many and varied communities.
"This survey will provide New Zealanders with an insight into how well society is meeting the challenges associated with providing organised amateur sport to people of all ages." He says "amateur sport is a social-good, providing benefits to inidividuals, families and wider community groups which come from participating in many different ways".
It's intended to present findings in regional seminars throughout New Zealand in November 2018, as well as to make a summary available on the Association’s website (http://www.asa.org.nz).
The NZ ASA was formed in 2017 to work collaboratively with all sporting codes in promoting, fostering, advancing and encouraging the core values of organised amateur sport, with the goal of ensuring there are opportunities, incentives and recognition for all participants, which are aligned to their distinctive status as amateurs.
The Association’s vision is for all New Zealand communities (urban and rural) to have viable and enduring amateur sporting bodies which are able to attract, engage, build and sustain membership based on each participant’s and each community’s unique needs.
