The seventh annual Wellington Samoa Rugby Union’s Village 10s tournament is being held on fields 3 and 4 of Porirua Park (top fields) on Saturday.
This year’s Village Kings is an eight-team tournament. Teams are representing several villages and districts in Samoa, plus the Wellington and Hutt Valley Samoans teams and a composite invitational Fijian team this year.
Teams taking part are: Aiga Malisi (defending champions), Wellington Samoans, Vaitoloa, Faleata, Wellington Fijians, Tanugamanono, Hutt Valley Samoans and Moata’a.
The playing format for all games is two 10-minute halves with two-minute halftime intervals. Teams can carry up to 25 players in their squad, with 10 players on the field and five reserves in any given game. Players and spectators alike can look forward to a fast-paced day of all-action rugby.
With a third of Wellington’s senior rugby players of Pacific Island heritage, a host of well-known rugby players are expected to take part in this tournament including a core group of Wellington Development squad players whose season finished last weekend and some sevens players preparing for the second and third legs of the American Ambassador’s sevens tournament in the subsequent fortnight.
There is prize money up for grabs, with the Village Kings tournament winner receiving $1,200, the losing Cup finalist $700, the Plate winner $350 and the Bowl winner $150.
Aiga Malisi won last year’s tournament, the Marist St Pat’s-influenced side winning both Cup knockout matches at the death. PJ Isoefo for the Wellington Samoans was the Player of the Tournament.
