Above: Ryan Setefano, playing for the WRFU representative team, evades his Marist St Pat’s club teammates in Pool Play in today’s WRFU Open Sevens tournament?
The Wellington representative Men’s team, the St Pat’s Silverstream school team and the Avalon club were the three Cup winners from today’s WRFU Open Sevens tournament held at Naenae College.
The Wellington representative side won the Men’s Cup final, St Pat’s Silverstream won the Colts final and Avalon took out the Women’s final.
Wellington won a feisty Men’s Cup final 57-7 over one of the two Fijian sides entered.?
Two yellow cards, the second of which that led to a red card meant that the Fijians played the entire second half 10 minute spell a man down and the WRFU romped in to win. They scored nine tries in total.?
The final was close early, but tries late in the first half to Murphy Taramai and Sheridan Rangihuna followed by a scuffle in the in-goal and the second yellow card put WRFU ahead 24-7 at halftime.
Earlier, the WRFU team had beaten MSP 21-12, Wainuiomata 21-5 and Tawa (by default) in their Pool matches, defeated HOBM A 40-5 ?in their Cup quarterfinal and Avalon 29-0 in their Cup semi-final.?
Beaten Cup finalists Wellington Fiji 2 defeated defending American Ambassador’s club champions the Upper Hutt Rams 17-14 in the other Cup semi-final. The Rams had four players in the WRFU side.?
The WRFU side that won the Cup final was: Isaac O’Connor, Hayden Schrijvers, Greg Foe, Sheridan Rangihuna, Ryan Setefano, Tomasi Alosio, Ambrose Curtis, Matt Peni, Tamati Samuels, Belgium Tuatagaloa, Taniela Manu, Murphy Taramai, Lise Soloa, Josh Robertson-Weepu.
The St Pat’s Silverstream side warmed up for Labour Day’s Condor Sevens tournament at the same venue by beating the Northern United Colts 17-12 in the Colts division final.
Northern United, featuring Wellington Lion Jackson Garden-Bachop, looked slick early before tiring and allowing Silverstream to come from behind to win by scoring a try with the final play of the game. Silverstream fielded a number of players from their big 15s ?pack this year, including Joe Apikotoa, Asafo Aumua, Vern Sodefo, Lui Okeamoa-Lumanau and Daniel Schrijvers - who's older brother Hayden played for the WRFU winning team.
Silverstream had beaten Wellington College by the same score, 17-12, in their Colts Cup semi-final.?
Avalon comfortably defeated Wainuiomata 35-0 in the Women’s Cup final, with New Zealand Sevens squad member Kat Simpkins leading the way. The final result was almost overturned on a protest as Avalon fielded Carol Sio, who not much more than an hour or so before had been captaining the Wellington Pride to a 36-10 win over Hawke’s Bay in the Women’s NPC over at Porirua Park.
Wainuiomata beat Marist St Pat’s 38-7 to win the Men’s Plate final.?
The widest winning margin of the day was the WRFU’s 57-7 win over the Fiji team in the final, while the tightest match was a 7-7 draw in Pool play between Johnsonville and the Wellington Axemen.?
The second of two WRFU Sevens tournaments, the American Ambassador’s tournament, is being held in a fortnight at Evans Bay Park and the St. Pat’s Artificial ground.?
