Toa topple Tawa White at Tawa Sevens

Toa (pictured above at the end of the day) are the inaugural Tawa Sevens champions, defeating Tawa White 10-7 in the Cup final at a festive Lyndhurst Park this afternoon.

An array of musicians and local entertainers treated a healthy crowd all afternoon off the field, as several closely fought knockout matches unfolded on it.

In the Tawa New World Cup final, Toa met Tawa White and won a mighty tussle two tries to one after trailing 7-5 at halftime. Guest Toa player Jackson Garden-Bachop was the individual hero, steaming 45 metres down the touchline to score the match-clinching try in the second half.

Previously, Tawa Premier club player TJ Fermanis opened the scoring for Toa when he sprinted 40 metres after being put in the clear. Tawa replied with a try in the southwest corner to James So’oialo, which he converted from the sideline.

Both teams had won contrasting Cup semi-finals. Toa beat the 2013 Piri Weepu Sevens champions the Fijian Flyers 17-14, holding on after scoring three early tries and surviving to the end in a grandstand finish with a player down who had been yellow carded. Tawa White defeated the Manawatu Fijians 19-7, pulling clear after scores had been locked up at 7-7 at halftime.

The Plate final went to extra time, with the Bawldogs side clinching a 17-12 victory over the Wellington Axemen after scores had been locked up at 12-12 at the end of regulation fulltime.

The second Manawatu Fijians side in the tournament won the Bowl final, defeating Clockwork 24-0 for a comfortable victory.

The morning play Pool play had seen no shortage of action with several high scoring results. The late withdrawal of the Boomerang side led to Wellington playing just one match and going down to Tawa White.

A very well-run tournament ended with the presentations and then up in the clubrooms with the anticipation of DJ Milkshake playing into the evening.?
