Poneke’s big game experience could prove too much for Hutt Old Boys Marist when the two teams meet in their semi-final at Kilbirnie Park. The 2003 Jubilee Cup champions and 2004 finalists only just missed out on a third successive final last year when they were pipped in the dying stages by eventual winners Petone in their top four fixture.
With several players having playoff experience, and the sage coaching of Richard Watt and John Jackson behind the scenes, Poneke’s loyal supporters will be confident that their team can continue their impressive recent form. Top qualifiers and winners of the Andy Leslie Trophy, the red-and-blacks have now won five and drawn one of their last seven starts, mixing tenacious defence with sweeping attacking rugby.
But if one side deserves to play in next week’s final at Westpac Stadium it is HOBM, who have played consistently well all season. The Eagles went through the first seven rounds of the Swindale Shield unbeaten, before finishing second behind Norths. Playing organised, positive rugby, HOBM came out on the right side of several close results and have continued their solid form through the Cup round. But for a 3-5 defeat to Old Boys-University in atrocious conditions three weeks ago they would have been pressing for a home semi-final.
Also heightening the anticipation of this game are the two previous match-ups between these sides in 2006 – both won by HOBM. Four second half converted tries saw HOBM run riot and win 28-18 in the opening match of the season, while the 20-13 score in the first Cup round was Poneke’s last loss. With hundreds of fans of both sides lining Kilbirnie Park, this promises to be knockout rugby at its best.
