New Zealand club rugby round-up, 4 June

After last week’s stormy weather, much of the rugby around the country on Saturday was played in fantastic conditions, with the first day of winter serving up a treat.

All competitions are deep into their seasons now, with some teams who won’t be in involved in playoffs this year eyeing up the home stretch before they hit the beach for the off-season in just a few weeks from now.

In Southland, competition leaders the Eastern Northern Barbarians made it 10 wins on the trot with a 38-0 victory over Star, under lights on Wednesday night. New Plymouth Old Boys also secured their 10th straight win in a high scoring Taranaki round, overcoming Clifton 43-30.

There’s a week remaining in the Canterbury metro first round competition. New Brighton edged competition leaders Lincoln University on Saturday to close to within a point. Lincoln has a much tougher assignment in the last round in third placed Sydenham, where as New Brighton meets minnows Belfast.

Wanderers and Nelson will meet in the combined Nelson Bays – Marlborough Tasman Trophy club final on Queen’s Birthday Monday.

Old Boys University were presented with the first round Swindale Shield in Wellington. Of note, Northern United, who won 10 combined first and second round titles between 2003-11 again missed out on the ‘top 8’ for the championship round starting next weekend.

Leaders Mount Maunganui flexed their muscles with a big win in round 11 of the Baywide competition, while Whakatane Marist defeated Tauranga Sports 27-17 in a feature clash.

Top of the pile Takapuna defeated Northcote 37-25 in a key North Harbour 10th round fixture.
