New Brighton took out the first round Canterbury Metro Hawkins Cup on Saturday. Heading into the last round they were neck and neck with three-time defending champions Lincoln University – whom they beat last week – on 40 points.
But while Lincoln University could only battle past Sydenham 15-10, New Brighton blasted Belfast 72-12 for a 12-try bonus point win and top spot on the winner's podium.
The second round top six-bottom six series starts in Christchurch this coming weekend.
Nelson defeated Wanderers 18-15 in the Tasman Trophy final on Queen’s Birthday Monday, reversing a big defeat to them earlier in the season and snapping their unbeaten run. Scores were locked up at 3-3 at halftime and both sides scored two tries apiece in a tight final.
New Plymouth Old Boys continue to set a cracking pace in Taranaki, winning their 11th straight match, albiet a close 22-20 win over Inglewood. First round Wellington winners and defending champions Old Boys University lost their second match of the year, 18-20 to the Upper Hutt Rams.
There were four close results in the opening week of the Baywide championship series, including a 22-22 draw between Whakatane Marist and Rotoiti. Last week’s first round winners Mount Maunganui defeated Rangataua 29-22.
Napier Old Boys Marist and Taradale lead the Maddison Trophy in Hawke’s Bay, both on maximum points after three rounds.
Takapuna (North Harbour) and Hautapu (Waikato) firmed their leads in their competitions.
