Total Touch invites club rugby clubs and players to enter teams for the upcoming 14-week summer touch rugby season.

The pre-season tournament on the first day of October is already full, showing the popularity of the sport. Pop down to Wakefield Park from 12-4pm for a cheeky look at how Total Touch run their competitions and the fun being had.

The regular season starts on 17 October, with registrations closing on 9 October. Total Touch competitions run at Wakefield Park Monday- Thursday nights, with a women’s grade on Wednesdays. It’s just $665 for the 14 week season plus $10 a night for referee fees.

There are lunchtime leagues too at Anderson Park and Boyd Wilson Field ($750 for the season including the referee fees) and two shorter modules at Alex Moore and Hutt Parks (6 weeks $200 plus referee fees).

Their junior modules keep building. Last season Total Touch had 160 junior teams at Hutt Park alone, and they have expanded in to Johnsonville. The juniors run at Wakefield, Alex Moore, Fraser and Hutt and those are $155 for the season.

Touch rugby is a great way for players to keep fit over the off-season and for teams to stay together, while the skillset is increasingly relevant in transferring between the two with today’s modern, fast-paced game. There is also an official relationship between the NZRU and Touch NZ to bring the two sports closer.

It is also a fun game to referee, some rugby referees are also involved in Touch in the summer and new referees are always welcome.

Grab your mates and register your team today.

Touch Rules at a glance:

  • 6 on the field (Max of 3 guys for mixed grades)
  • 6 touches before it is a hand over
  • When touched you dump the ball between your legs on the ground for the ‘Dummy Half’ to pick up
  • Dummy Half cannot score and if they are touched it is a turnover
  • If you are touched and pass the ball it is a turn over
  • If the ball hits the ground it is a turn over
  • Defensively- once you make a touch you must retreat 5 metres or to the tryline.
