Three secondary school sevens tournaments are set to alight the lower North Island on Saturday, in the build-up to regional and then national Condor Sevens tournaments.
The tournaments are the Hurricanes Youth Rugby Council 7s in Palmerston North the Derek Wotton Memorial 7s at Porirua Park and the Hutt 7s at Naenae College in Lower Hutt.
The Hurricanes tournament at the Sport and Rugby Institute will be headlined by Hastings Boys’ High School (boys) and Feilding High School (girls), who are the defending champions and expected to be strong again.
Other schools involved are from Wellington, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Napier, Hastings, and Palmerston North.
The fifth annual Wotton 7s on Jerry Collins Stadium involves a number of boys and girls teams from schools throughout the Porirua region as well as in Wellington.
Derek Wootton was a Porirua Police officer who was killed in the line of duty in July 2008. In 2009 the Trust was set up on the anniversary of his death. One of the aims of the trust is to support youth in the Porirua and Kapiti area by assisting with ways to improve their lives whether it be sporting, cultural or academic.
The Hutt 7s is a six-team boys competition, involving five local schools and an entrant from Scots College. The tournament is short and sharp, over by early afternoon.
Both the Wotton and Hutt 7s tournaments are lead-up events to the Wellington and Wairarapa legs of the national Condor Sevens qualifying tournament being staged on Labour Day Monday on 24 October at Naenae College.
