Moata’a beat defending champions Anoma’a 12-5 in the Cup final of the Village Kings 10-a-side tournament that was played in often driving rain at Wise Park in Wainuiomata.
Moata’a, with a heavy Hutt Old Boys Marist club influence, beat the Anoma’a team, with a Marist St Pat’s – Oriental-Rongotai flavour, two tries to one in the main final. Moata’a had beaten Maile 38-14 in their Cup quarter-final and then edged Vailima 17-15 in their semi-final.
Anoma’a reached the final with a 10-7 quarter-final win over the home side the Wainuiomata Samoans and then beat Vaitoloa 29-19 in their semi-final.
The Wainuiomata Samoans defeated Faleata 15-12 in the Plate final, winning the match in extra time after coming back to score a last-gasp try to lock the scores up at the end of regular time. The result came down to who scored first, with former Samoan international Sevens regular Uale Mai kicking the winning points with a penalty.
John Tuia from the losing Cup finalists Anoma’a was the Player of the Tournament.
Samoan Sevens captain and Hawke’s Bay Magpies Falemiga Selesele was a clear stand out player for the winning Moata’a team.
The Wellington Fijians ran away from the visiting Manawatu Fijians with a 47-7 win over them in the Bowl decider.
St. Pat’s Silverstream successfully defended the Wellington U15 Condor Sevens title defeating Scots College 17-14 at Naenae College in a replay of last year's final.
Scots was on course to win the final snatching the lead twice courtesy of two tries. However Silverstream's Cassius Misa scored a try to close the gap to 14-12 and then set-up the winner with the last play of the game. In the senior sevens Silverstream beat Scots in extra time.
Earlier in the day Rongotai College appeared to be the favourites. Rongotai breezed through pool play scoring 82 unanswered points and eliminated the highly fancied St. Pats Town in the quarter finals. Trailing 12-0, Rongotai won 24-19 in extra time. Christianlee Tutaki, Jason Fa'amausili and Siatua Taituave impressed throughout the day and bagged tries in this thrilling encounter.
In the semi-final between Silverstream and Rongotai, Silverstream jumped ahead 17-0 via quick tries to Misa, Reihana Dalton and Scott Svenson. Rongotai rallied, but too late and lost 17-12.
Scots was a fast and well organised team and scored 20 tries en route to the final beating Taita College (31-5), Naenae College (31-10), St. Bernard's College (20-7) and Wellington College (32-10).
St. Pats Town won the bowl and Naenae College the plate in a fabulous contest 28-17 against Upper Hutt. Tafa Banya (Upper Hutt) and Stanley Fiso (Naenae) were two of the better players on display. Both boys scored two tries in this game, but Naenae edged it after a offload on the ground in a two-man tackle by Fred Leaupepe Tema set up an improbable winning try.
The next tournament in Wellington is the WRFU American Ambassador’s Sevens, next Saturday up the road at Mary Crowther Park, with several strong contenders in the Men’s, Colts and Women’s divisions vying to win the Wellington club sevens championship.
