Southern win back to back sevens titles

Southern has continued their positive run of form in the sevens game claiming the Dewar Shield for the second year in a row beating Tukapa 35-20 in the final.

In a repeat of last year’s final, Southern took the early lead scoring two tries but Tukapa came back but were always playing catch up rugby on the number one ground at Yarrow Stadium. However, it wasn’t as one sided as last year’s final with Southern winning by 46-0.

Both Southern and Tukapa were the form teams throughout the competition being unbeaten in pool play.

Southern beat Clifton comprehensively 43-10 in the semi-final and Tukapa pipped Spotswood 26-21 scoring in the last play of the game to progress into the finale.

Inglewood and New Plymouth Old Boys lost both lost their two round robin matches in a six team, two pool draw.

In the other divisions, Clifton beat Bell Block in the colts final 54-12 in a try fest which included a penalty try to Clifton for a high tackle close to the line. Clifton beat Coastal 12-7 and Bell Block beat Tukapa 29-5 in the semi-finals.

Tukapa pipped Southern in the senior thirds final in golden point time winning 24-19 after being all tied up at 19 all.

And in the women’s section visitors Rongataua upset New Plymouth Girls High School in the final.

Next Sunday, Yarrow Stadium will continue to host the secondary school sevens tournament starting at 9:30am.
