Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu and Wellington teams win Central Sevens

UPDATE: In a repeat of last year, teams from Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu and Wellington won the main prizes at the Paladin Sports Hawke’s Bay Sevens tournament at Waipukurau on Saturday.

Napier Pirate (Men’s), Feilding Old Boys Oroua (Women’s) and Petone (Colts) all successfully defended their titles, with Feilding winning for the third straight year and Petone claiming a four-peat of victories in the Colts section.

In the Championship finals, Napier Pirate defeated Havelock North 17-7 to win the 34th edition of the Ian Baker Cup, Feilding defeated Petone 29-7 to retain the Jiangsu Jersey and Petone overcame Hastings Rugby & Sports 17-12 in their final for the Angus Cup

Players of the Tournament were Havelock North’s Tiaan Falcon (Men’s), Feilding’s Kristina Sue (Women’s) and Petone’s Carlos Price (Colts).

Home team the Pratt Hawkes recovered from a shaky start when they missed the start of their first game to beat Otane 24-7 in the B grade Men’s final.

Pratt Hawkes scored three tries in the first spell and led 19-0 at halftime. Otane themselves had lost to Wanganui raiders Ngamatapouri in their B Grade semi-final, but the latter were subsequently penalised for a player rules breach.

Clive’s 14-5 win over Taradale in the Women’s playoff for third and fourth was marred by a lengthy injury delay to one of Taradale’s players, while Hawke’s Bay team Brothers 7s won the Men’s C Grade final by beating Petone B 21-0 in the decider.

The tournament was played in overcast conditions with steady rain or drizzle falling throughout the day, including a couple of heavy showers during section play.

As a consequence there were a succession of close results throughout, with many of the day’s 45 matches decided by narrow margins and several sides struggling in the slippery conditions at key moments.

The rain cleared for the three main finals later in the afternoon. In the Women’s final, Feilding scored first, but a turnover and a 50-metre try put Petone ahead 7-5. With Kristina Sue and fellow Manawatu representative Kristin Duffil leading the way for them, Feilding hit back with a converted try to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

Petone started the second half off hot on attack, but a feilding breakout and 90-metre try saw them pull clear and retain the title.

The Colts final that followed was on tenterhooks until well into the second half. Petone had scored first virtually from the opening kick-off, but Hastings hit back with two consecutive tries to lead 12-5 at halftime.

Hastings went desperately close to scoring a third try, which would have put them up three tries to one, but Petone held on and were awarded a defensive penalty. Inside his own 22, sweeper and new recruit Carlos Price tapped and launched a 70-metre counter-attack that put them on level footing at 12-12.

Price then scored himself for Petone and they could start celebrating their win. Petone had earlier beaten Napier Pirate 38-0, Manukura 35-0 and Napier Old Boys Marist A 41-0.

In a replay of last year’s Men’s final, Napier Pirate led Havelock North 10-7 at halftime and held on throughout the second half in gathering darkness.

The Pirates struck their banner first in the final, showing good continuity to score in the corner. Havelock North took the lead with a converted try to Hurricane Tiaan Falcon, before recent All Blacks Sevens representative Jono Ruru finished off a 100 metre effort for his Pirate side, which proved the key try of the match.

Aaron McPhee was cut down just short of the line, after a clean break by Matt Hill, but a penalty try was awarded to Napier in front of the vocal Central Park clubrooms. Behind 7-17, Hastings should have scored at least once more but their player was tackled just short of the chalk after a big break.

Previously, Napier Pirate had beaten NZ Marist champions Napier Old Boys Marist in their semi-final, while Havelock North had edged recent NZ Club 7s contender Napier Technical 10-5 in the their top four clash.
