The battle of the two unbeaten teams in the WelTec First XV Premiership was the proverbial game of two halves in perfect conditions at Jerry Collins Stadium in Porirua this afternoon.
Silverstream won 35-24 in the end, to finish top qualifier ahead of next week's semi-finals.
Both St Patrick’s College, Silverstream and Scots College have been the dominant attacking teams all season and the match was a high-quality affair with some excellent counter attack.
Silverstream defended early attacks from Scots, but eventually strung together phases and finished off some outstanding tries to lead 35-8 at halftime.
Tries to outside backs Chris Aumua and Kienan Higgins were responded to by Scots with some attack of their own. Hurricanes Under-18 centre Tai Neli broke several tackles to score and Malo Manuoa added a penalty to have Silverstream lead 14-8 after 20 minutes.
Silverstream put the foot to the accelerator and began to find holes in midfield. Higgins creative passing resulted in further tries to Aumua and rampaging centre Albert Polu. Fullback Riley Forbes brought up 100 points in the premiership by converting all five tries.
The second half started at breakneck speed - an early interception to Jack Gray and a disallowed try to Albert Polu due to a forward pass call from the touch judge was followed by a period of sustained pressure from Scots who threw everything at the Stream defence which held until Scots eventually rumbled over under the posts twice to bring the score to 35-22. Scots second-half tries were scored by Moala Katoa and Gray.
For Silverstream front rower Luke Chisholm lock Iona Apineru carried and openside Josh Southall were prominent on both attack and at the breakdown. Higgins and Polu created numerous opportunities while Aumua was more than a handful for the Scots defence.
Katoa is a good prospect for Scots and Gray in space is potent.
In other WelTec Premiership games this afternoon, Wellington College beat Porirua College 46-5, Kapiti College beat Hutt Valley High School 51-7, St Pat's Town defeated Rongotai College 27-14 and Tawa College defeated Wairarapa College 26-24.
Next week's semi-finals see top qualifier Silverstream play St Pat's Town and second placed Scots College engage Wellington College.
