Wellington Pride, Samoans and Maori sides in action at home tomorrow

It’s a bumper day of representative action as most sides are in action. With just three sides on the road, the majority are at home with the Hutt Rec and Porirua Park the focal points.

After opening their Farah Palmer Cup campaign with a relatively comfortable 42-10 win over returnees Hawke’s Bay, the Wellington Pride face a step up against one of the perennial contenders of the competition in the Manawatu Cyclones at the Hutt Rec at 2pm. Manawatu will be well-rested, having had the bye in the opening weekend of the 11-team competition and will be keen to stamp an early mark. Their side includes two members of the World Cup-winning Black Ferns in halfback Kristina Sue and the always dangerous Selica Winiata at fullback, and two faces familiar to the Pride in first-five Lizzie Goulden and tighthead prop Anna Darling. Pride coach Ross Bond has made a handful of changes with Ories pair Raylene Lolo and Joanah Ngan-Woo elevated to the starting side along with Newlands College schoolgirl Jane Bryce who replaces Ayesha Leti-l’iga on the left wing.

The early entertainment at the Rec is provided by the U18 Girls team taking on their Tasman counterparts at 12pm with Wellington looking to build on their 35-29 win away over Taranaki last weekend.

Across at Porirua Park are another three games as the venue plays host to the Wellington Samoan Rugby Union’s annual day. First up the Samoan Women’s side takes on a NZ Institute of Sports selection at 11.30am, followed by the U18 Boys side – fresh off a 35-5 win in Gisborne last Saturday – taking on Wairarapa Bush (who drew 20-all with Wanganui last weekend) at 1pm.

The feature clash of the day out there, however, is that between the Samoan men and the Maori in their Hurricanes Shield encounter at 2.45pm where no quarter will be asked for or given. The Samoan’s are looking to rebound from last weekend’s 15-31 defeat to Hawkes Bay’s development side, while the Maori will want to keep the momentum of their 32-22 win over Manawatu Development.

The remaining games locally are not that far away at the Bernie Wood artificial turf in Ascot Park, with the U16B side facing Wairarapa Bush at 11.15, followed by the U16A’s taking on the Norths Academy at 1pm.

Away from home are the Under 13s who make the flight up to the big smoke to take on Auckland, with the U18 Centurions considerably closer at the Paraparaumu Domain against Horowhenua Kapiti U18 at 1pm. The Centurions men are in Napier to take on Hawkes Bay Development.

On Sunday the U19 side gets underway at the Jock Hobbs Memorial tournament in Taupo when they take on North Harbour at 12.30pm. Yesterday the final squad for that team was named, and is:
