Wainui power past Petone as Swindale Shield champs HOBM go down again

Wainuiomata scored 38 unanswered points from late in the first half to power past Petone 50-20, while Swindale Shield Champions Hutt Old Boys Marist's season is on the skids after losing 13-44 to Oriental-Rongotai in third round Jubilee Cup matches on Saturday.

Wainuiomata turned around a 12-20 deficit late in the first half to score a further six tries and blast the home side off the Petone Recreation Ground in the second and grab their second win from three matches.

After winning the first round title just three weeks ago, HOBM are in danger of missing out on the Jubilee Cup playoffs after suffering a comprehensive defeat to championship holders Ories at the Polo Ground.

Like Wainuiomata, Ories did the damage in the second half, pulling away from the Eagles after they led by one try to nil at halftime and then 8-6 early in the second half.

Ories scored a further five tries, before HOBM, who had earlier lost captain and halfback Nick Risdon to injury, pegged the deficit back with a late consolation try.

At Lyndhurst Park, Tawa's committed forward pack stunned Norths early, producing a dominant first half to help lay on three tries and take a match winning 17-3 lead into halftime.

Norths wrung the changes at halftime and came back at Tawa, but the home side held on to win 20-13 amid a hotly contested second half of rugby in front of a big crowd.

At Maidstone Park, MSP were too good for home side Upper Hutt in their 38-0, six tries to nil win. After opening the scoring with a penalty try, MSP effectively made the game safe when fullback Andrew Wells and No. 8 Tevita Ah Wong added converted tries and they led 21-0.

Wing Ryan Setefano bagged a double as MSP pulled further ahead and won the game comfortably, their? 17^th straight win over Upper Hutt in Premier rugby.

In the Hardham Cup there were comfortable wins for leading duo Poneke and Old Boys University and closer victories to the Wests Roosters and Johnsonville.

Tighthead prop Misiluni Moananu scored one of Poneke's eight tries in his 200^th Premier start for the club, while Hurricane Charlie Ngatai and fullback Michael Sage scored two each and first five-eighth Cameron Clement kicked six conversions in their 52-5 win over Northern United B at Kilbirnie Park.

OBU were pushed hard for long periods by MSB B before running out 31-10 winners at the Hawkins Basin Reserve.

The Wests Roosters overcame Rimutaka 13-10 in a titanic struggle at Maoribank Park, a first half penalty try for Wests proving the difference on the scoreboard.

At Helston Park, Johnsonville and Wainuiomata were doing it in penalties for long periods into their game, before Johnsonville pulled clear from a 6-6 halftime scoreline with two tries to eventually win 23-6

In the Senior 1 Ed Chaney Cup, Petone and Poneke remain unbeaten while the Wellington Axemen's unbeaten season came to an end.

Petone pipped Avalon 19-16 and Poneke edged OBU 16-15 in two titanic struggles, while Wellington went down to fellow promoted club Upper Hutt 12-16.

In two other close Senior 1 games, Paremata-Plimmerton beat Tawa 13-8 and HOBM beat Ories 18-10, thus shutting Ories out of any bonus points.

In the Senior 2 HD Morgan Memorial, just HOBM remain unbeaten after three rounds, following their 17-12 win over Ories.

In other Senior 1 results, MSP beat OBU 17-10, Norths pipped Poneke 15-12, Stokes Valley beat the Wests Rooster 20-7 and Petone defeated Avalon 28-3.

In Premier Women's results, Norths beat Ories 36-14 at Porirua, OBU edged out Eketahuna 12-5 away and Wainiomata beat Stokes Valley 30-0 at Delaney Park.

In Premier 1 college first XV results, Wellington College grabbed their sixth straight victory while there were big wins for the two St. Pat's colleges and a tight win for St Bernard's.

Wellington College edged out Scots College 13-0, St Pat's Town beat HIBS 65-13, St Pat's Silverstream beat Aotea College 56-7 and St Bernard's defeated Rongotai College 25-20.

Around the Jubilee Cup grounds

Defending champions Oriental-Rongotai remain the only unbeaten side after three rounds of the Jubilee Cup, having defeated Wainuiomata, Upper Hutt and now Hutt Old Boys Marist.They were slow to get into their work at home at the Polo Ground but when the did came alive after halftime they were dangerous in all facets.

2011 New Zealand Schools captain and openside flanker Ardie Savea, who played on the wing for the Hurricanes in their friendly match against the Reds in Queensland recently, typified their potency, scoring their first try after halftime to take them out to a 15-6 lead.

From there they flicked a switch, No. 8 Joe Maiava crossing for his third try in two weeks, fullback Hayden Whelan grabbing a double and locks Dan Reddish and Kelipi Halafihi also scoring.Ories, who could have more firepower back next week in resting Hurricanes Motu Matu’u, Mark Reddish (who started off the bench) and the new Miramar Miracle Julian Savea, not to mention U20 players Matt Proctor and Ambrose Curtis, play Petone next week and they will take some stopping.

Wainuiomata were equally electric against Petone in a highly entertaining game for the neutral supporter, perhaps more frustrating for the home one. Petone led 20-19 at halftime, a feature being some breathtaking try scoring by both sides.Petone wing Belgium Tuatagaloa scored two first half tries and helped set up a third to fullback Andrew Quinlivan after a turnover inside their own 22 and an 85-metre breakout.

After halftime, Wainuiomata quickly scored two converted tries to race ahead 31-20. Wings Teru Time and Jason Love each scoring tries, before Love made a try saving tackle on his goalline that stopped a likely second Quinlivan try in its tracks.

Wainuiomata went out to a 40-20 lead when Samoan wider squad member Greg Lealofi ran off the shoulder of first five-eighth John Monu and scored under the posts. From there, Love and Lealofi each grabbed their second tries as the green and blacks brought up their half century.

At Lyndhurst Park, Castres, Samoan and 2009-2011 Norths fullback James So’oialo was listed to play - for Tawa - but this fell through as his clearance failed.

A large crowd of mixed supporters could almost feel the early hits as Tawa’s pack crunched into Norths from the get-go and clearly rattled them. Tighthead prop Taniela Koroi was into his work early, while hooker Matthew Treeby, locks Filisione Koloamatangi and Brian Burridge and No. 8 Stephen Sasagi meant business.

Tawa’s dominant early scrum and lineout created their three tries in the first half. Koroi dived over in front of the clubrooms after an attacking scrum and? Burridge scored after a kick into the corner and a lineout. In between halfback Steven So’oialo’s seized on a mistake at the back of a Norths scrum and scampered 40 metres to score.

Norths, who missed a try right on halftime with what appeared from afar to be a knock-on over the line that could have made a huge difference, found themselves 14 points down at halftime. They regrouped, made several changes off the bench and came back strongly. Lock Tim Faleafaga scored from a scrum on the Tawa line to close the deficit to 17-8.

Tawa were awarded a penalty on Norths’ side of halfway, Norths back-chatted the referee and were marched 10 metres and replacement Tawa halfback Jono Boyd kicked them to a 20-8 lead with 25 minutes remaining.With replacement halfback Tomasi Palu adding spark and No. 8 Dean Brunsdon having another big game, Norths came back at Tawa but the home side held on.

Tawa reclaimed the impetus and spent a period of attack inside the Norths’ 22 was held out by the visitors who counterattacked and scored their second try to Dudley Parsons with a couple of minutes to play. Given more time, a grandstand finish might have? been on the cards, but referee Baker blew fulltime and Tawa celebrated.

MSP’s win over Upper Hutt was entirely comfortable for the visitors at Maidstone Park. MSP scored four converted tries and led 28-0 at halftime. Left wing Ryan Setefano scored under the posts at the end of the first spell and then scored his second try in the second half to wrap up their victory over Upper Hutt who, along with HOBM and Petone are likely gone from semi-final contention.
