Over 20 teams from all over the Lower North Island will descend on the Greytown Rugby Club on Saturday for the club’s annual Sevens tournament.

The tournament has been going for over 40 years and is an important part of the Greytown rugby club. “It’s quite hard work getting organised, but it’s a great fundraiser for the club,” explained Club Chairman Neil Morrison. “It used to be different, because it was solely Wairarapa Bush teams and it was a pre-season hit-out for all the clubs. It’s got more professional now as players come from out of the area and play as part of the sevens circuit. “

The day-long tournament at the East Street grounds in Greytown features Senior and Colts divisions, starting at 9.00am.

In 2012 the event drew teams from Wellington, Hawke’s Bay and Horowhenua-Kapiti, who lined up alongside seven local entries from the Wairarapa clubs. After some intense competition throughout the day, a Carterton Fijian invitation side defeated Havelock North to take the senior title, whilst Havelock North gained revenge in the Colts final with a victory over Upper Hutt.

The Pools will be finalised on Friday evening.
