7s: Mt Maunganui Sevens to usher in 2014

Mt Maunganui is set to sizzle this Saturday with the annual Bay Engineers Supplies Provincial Sevens Tournament on Saturday being played at Blake Park.

Twelve provincial men’s and eight women’s teams are descending on the Mount for this tournament, which is a dress rehearsal for the National 7s in Rotorua the following weekend.

As well as all the leading North Island provinces, both the Canterbury men’s and women’s squads are involved. Both Canterbury teams won their respective divisions in the recent South Island Zone National qualifying tournament.?

The day-long tournament kicks off at 9.00 am with the opening match between last year’s Mt Maunganui tournament champions Auckland and Northland, the team Auckland beat in the final of the recent Northern Zone National qualifying tournament. This tournament’s defending women’s champions Waikato meet Manawatu in the first women’s match at 10.40 am.?

Many leading players are expected to take part.?

The knockout rounds scheduled to start at 1.10 pm and the women’s final at 5.40 pm and men’s final at 6.05 pm.

The tournament is played on Titches Pitch, which was officially named last year after Sir Gordon Tietjens after he was recognised in the IRB Hall of Fame.
