His Wellington College First XV upset St. Patrick's College, Silverstream, 25-22. Goosen spent most of that season injured. In a pre-season fixture against Napier Boys' High School (at the same venue) he broke his finger and suffered a stress fracture in his back. Above: OBU and MSP will both be hoping to soar high when they host home Jubilee Cup semi-finals at the Basin Reserve and Evans Bay Park respectively tomorrow. It's Premier semi-finals day tomorrow in Wellington. As well as the matches in both the Jubilee and Hardham Cups, there are also the semi-finals in Premier Women’s, another round in the lower grades the resumption of college rugby; and in all conditions should be close to ideal for rugby if the forecast proves correct. The Jubilee Cup matches have the very rare oddity that not just one, but both match-ups, are repeats of last weekend’s final round-robin encounters, even down to the same venues, while the two Hardham Cup games are both reverses in terms of venue from the round-robin contests...More

The history of the Jubilee Cup is littered with fairytale wins. In recent times, championship wins by Oriental-Rongotai (2011) and Tawa (2013) have been embraced by their local communities. In terms of cinematic seasons, it’s hard to go past Onslow’s first Jubilee Cup title success in 1955, the season when the community club representing suburban Ngaio and Khandallah took on and beat the established powerhouse clubs and won the title. For several years Onslow had been building. They had won promotion to the Senior 1st grade in 1947 after winning the second division the previous year and were unbeaten after the first round before falling away at the back end of the season...More

This Saturday’s Jubilee Cup semi-final between 2012 champions Marist St Pats and 2013 winners Tawa could come down to goal-kicking. In a straight shootout off the kicking tee, both sides possess the best. MSP first five-eighth Fa’atonu Fili has been kicking goals at this level for over 15 years and is the King of Evans Bay Park, whilst Tawa’s James So’oialo has kicked 1140 points in his seven-year Wellington Premier club rugby career. So’oialo missed last weekend’s seventh round showdown between the two sides with illness, won 44-38 by MSP, but is set to return to the starting XV at either first five-eighth or fullback for this playoff match...More

As we move into the business end of the 2015 club rugby season, we thought to find out what the record for the largest crowd in a Wellington club rugby match. The heyday of Wellington club rugby’s popularity was the 1950s, so that was our starting point. Several thousand people regularly attended matches at the Petone Recreation Ground when All Black fullback Bob Scott joined the club in 1954. There were famous club matches at Athletic Park in this period that drew crowds of 14,000-15,000, such as University-Petone clashes in 1952, 1954 and 1955 and 1956 and Petone-Onslow in 1955...More
