Aisle Be Back: All Blacks v Wales third Test and the return of Super Rugby
So who will fire out of the blocks well in the resumption of Super Rugby? Some teams were in more need of a respite than others - top of that list being the Chiefs.  The Hurricanes don’t count as one of those teams. They have been able to keep the squad pretty injury free, so well done on that front. As well our All Blacks, with of course the one rather enigmatic exception, are coming back with confidence high. While we treat the Blues as easy beats at our peril, it’s probably the best possible way to get the team firing up again...More
Roy Kinikinilau enjoying giving back to club rugby
Roy Kinikinilau’s rugby career has come full circle. He started at Oriental-Rongotai in the late 1990s as a young tearaway loose forward out of Rongotai College, then had an international sevens career spanning several years and a professional fifteens career that saw him play Super Rugby for three teams and then spend time in Japan. Now he’s back at his home club Oriental-Rongotai, helping out head coach Mason Lawrence and some weeks lacing up the boots playing the game he loves. But for how long? “If I need to jump in there I will – but I’m primarily playing some weeks because of the lack of numbers at the moment, “he said...More

Looking at the week ahead

Here's a look at the weekend ahead.  Three bucqui Jubilee Cup matches in town in the afternoon, and one at Westpac Stadium in the evening makes the fourth round of the competition this Saturday a must follow for rugby fans. Unbeaten Oriental-Rongotai could become the first team to qualify for this year’s semi-finals if they can beat a desperate Upper Hutt Rams at home at the Polo Ground...More
Excitement aplenty in Wellington’s club rugby competitions
UPDATED: There were some thrillers and some thrashings in Premier bucqui Jubilee Cup and Premier Reserve Hardham Cup club rugby matches today in Wellington on a still and mild mid-winter’s afternoon. In the Jubilee Cup, the Wellington Axemen came back to squeeze out Poneke 32-30 and Ories kicked on late to defeat Tawa 30-22. Conversely, Marist St Pat’s inflicted a 49-19 hiding upon defending champions Old Boys University and Wainuiomata overpowered the Upper Hutt Rams 51-20. In the Hardham Cup, Hutt Old Boys Marist came from behind to edge close rivals Petone 43-31, Paremata-Plimmerton pipped the Avalon Wolves 33-29 and Old Boys University defeated Marist St Pat’s 30-24 in the battle of the B teams...More
Pressure rising in club rugby competitions this weekend
As the days again start to slowly lengthen the pressure on the field only increases to rise. In the bucqi Jubilee Cup several teams have the chance to put themselves at the leading edge of the pack, while in the Hardham Cup three sides could already put themselves on the cusp of making the semi-finals already. Weather could be a factor too with rain forecast late on. Elsewhere there’s plenty of rugby to whet the appetite with significant games in the Women’s, First Grade, and Colts grades, and top-of the-table matches in all of the top three College grades too...More
Lealofi to play his 100th match for Wainuiomata
Greg Lealofi (pictured above in April this year bursting into Petone's defences) is celebrating 100 games for Wainuiomata this weekend when they tackle the Upper Hutt Rams in Round Three of the bucqui Jubilee Cup at Maidstone Park. The local flanker was captain of the St. Pat’s Silverstream First XV in 2008 and could well have been an Marist St Pat’s man. Marist legend Kevin Horan was very keen to acquire Lealofi's services. "MSP tried pretty hard to get me and I was tempted to go. They were the Jubilee Cup champions and are a great club...More
Mullany and Poneke playing positive rugby
Poneke’s Greg Mullany is the form first five-eighth of the Wellington club rugby competition. Last week Poneke pulled clear of Tawa in a tight one to win 24-15 and take their first bucqui Jubilee Cup win for almost three years and Mullany’s influence was a key reason why. He scored two tries (his third brace of the season) and set up another with his incisive running, nose for an opportunity and instinctive support play. Humble off the field, Mullany is pleased Poneke is playing well this year, after two consecutive Hardham Cup campaigns...More
Rongotai College defeat St Pat's Silverstream
Rongotai College has beaten St. Patrick's College, Silverstream for the first time since 2010, erasing a 14-6 halftime deficit to prevail 20-14 in Upper Hutt today. It's the fourth time this year Silverstream has surrendered a halftime lead to lose. Rongotai had a considerably bigger pack and in the early stages attempted to keep the ball in tight and punch holes close to the ruck. First-five Matiu Samuel punished Silverstream's indiscipline by slotting two penalties. Silverstream scored the first try, somewhat against the run of play, when livewire winger Lucas Dutton broke through some flimsy defence and released fellow winger Todd Svenson...More
Aisle Be Back: All Blacks v Wales Second Test
Are some of us a bit bored with the All Blacks? Yes, of course, it is tedious having to support what is historically rugby's most successful nation during what will no doubt be one day called its most golden era.No, I'm not toying with madness. But a work colleague was onto something this week when she explained why she hadn't gone to the stadium for the test. She's dead keen on her sports, rugby included, but confessed she wasn't feeling the thrill of seeing the All Blacks again. It wasn't boredom...More
