Bumper season ahead for Wellington Samoa Rugby Union

Hard work behind the scenes has helped pave the way for a bumper programme of matches coming up for the Wellington Samoa Rugby Union’s (WSRU) three representative teams in 2016.

Combined, the WSRU Senior Men, Senior Women and U18 Secondary Schools side will be playing at least 14 matches throughout August and September, in home and away matches.

The WSRU is also pleased to announce its new Senior Men’s team coaching team of Rodney So'oialo (Head Coach), Kas Lealamanua (Forwards Coach) and Steven So'oialo (Backs Coach). The trio of new coaches need no introduction, with Rodney So’oialo being a 54-Test All Black and current Wellington Axemen Premier coach and Steven So’oialo and Lealamanua both former Samoan internationals and on the Tawa and Marist St Pat’s club coaching staff respectively.

The women’s team will once more be coached by Jude Perez, with Joe and August Collins as assistants, helping in memory of their brother Willie who helped the women’s side last year. Pio Savali, together with Jamie Parkinson and Galu Letiu, will be looking to build on their efforts from last year with the U18s.

Running these three teams on a voluntary basis is a costly exercise and the WSRU thanks a group of sponsors that have come on board this year to offset some of this cost. With the support of their sponsors - Pioneer Finance, Pacific Business Trust, Southcoast Construction, Wellington Hospitality Group and BLK - this has meant significant savings in quality team apparel and uniform.

To help cover some of the other costs (travel, Physio’s, training equipment and facilities, etc), WSRU will be charging players a registration fee of $50.   And, in return for paying their fees, players will receive the new BLK Polo and BLK warm-up top (click on link below to go to their facebook page to see the gear).
