2013 end of season summary

With the 2013 season now over, here’s a recap of the champion teams in Wellington club rugby this year.

2013 will long be remembered for being the year of Tawa, whose Premier team finished the season holding just about every major trophy going. ?

As well as holding several interclub trophies, the Tawa Premiers are the 2013 Jubilee Cup and Swindale Shield champions. They also hold the Bill Brien challenge Trophy, the Ranfurly Shield of Wellington club rugby, and the Andy Leslie Trophy, the heaviest trophy of the lot. They also go into the upcoming? Sevens series holding the American Ambassador’s Trophy, the largest of them all. Tawa are also Senior 1 Ed Chaney Cup champions for 2013. It’s a dizzying array of silverware. They won the Team of the Year award at the end of season WRFU awards.

Other highlights from the season include the Northern United Women’s team recapturing the Fleurs Trophy - Victoria Tavern Trophy double and not losing all season, the Hutt Old Boys Marist Senior 2 side winning 11 from 11 in the first round to win the National Mutual Cup, the OBU Green Colts winning 16 from 16 in capturing the first and second round U21 titles and Upper Hutt winning the American Ambassador's Sevens title.

  • Paul Potiki Shield U85 Restricted Division 1: Marist St Pat’s Blues (beat Tawa 16-3 in the final)
  • U85 kg Restricted Division 2: Stokes Valley (beat HOBM 17-7 in the final)

  • John E Kelly Memorial Cup Colts: OBU Green (beat HOBM Green 28-12 in the final)
  • Vic Calcanai Cup Colts Division 2: Tawa (beat OBU Black 26-20 in the final)
  • Reserves Division 1 second round: Poneke Ruffnuts (beat MSP Internationals 29-13 in the final)
  • Reserves Division 2 second round: Upper Hutt J8s (beat Paremata-Plimmerton Punters 27-14)
  • American Ambassador's Sevens (November): Upper Hutt men's winners and Northern United women's winners

As well as Tawa winning the Team of the Year award, several other individuals and clubs were recognised at the WRFU end of season awards. These being:

Wainuiomata’s Jimmy Millar won the WRFU Volunteer of the Year award.

Wainuiomata won the Junior Merit Award Trophy, awarded to the club with the highest average aggregate points per game awarded by referees in club matches.

The Wainuiomata Senior 1 team won the? A J Griffiths Memorial Trophy, awarded to the team with the highest average aggregate points per game awarded by referees in club matches.

Hutt Old Boys Marist won the Sir William Perry Memorial Trophy, awarded to the club with the highest average of championship points per team.

Old Boys University won the Dewar Shield, awarded to the club scoring the highest aggregate of championship points in all grades.

Poneke's Sam Tui collected the Best and Fairest award, the Billy Wallace Trophy.
