St Patrick's College Silverstream held off a battling comeback by their city cousins, St Pat's Town, to win the inaugural BLK NZ Marist Secondary Schools Sevens Tournament in Wellington.
Two tries in quick succession by St Pat's Town clipped the Silverstream lead in a final won 15-10, to cap two days of competitive 7s Rugby by 12 secondary schools from Oamaru to Auckland.
Talented Silverstream back-line runner Salesi Rayasi was named the top player for the tournament and will travel with the New Zealand Marist senior side when it competes in the Samoan 7s tournament, in Apia.
Flanker Daniel Schrijvers scored two tries for Silverstream while team-mate Jordan King also scored, with St Pat's Town running hard against a strong southerly and disrupting the kick and chase tactics of Silverstream.
Kerrod Foaese scored the two tries for St Pat's Town, while Siosaia Paese eluded attackers on his home line to run the full length of the field.
He was stopped short but pounced on the rolling ball only to have his try disallowed.
Tournament Director Gordon Noble-Campbell says it was a gripping end to a highly successful tournament.
“There is a lot of enthusiasm for the second national tournament next year,” he says.
St Thomas of Canterbury College displayed top form to win the Plate beating their other South Island contenders St Kevin’s College 22-5, while St Bernard's from Lower Hutt held the edge over Auckland’s Santa Maria to win the Bowl 24-10.
A New Zealand Tournament Team was also selected and included players from the 12 competing teams from across New Zealand.
The Tournament Team is: Luta Gaualofa (Bishop Viard College); Reggie Boult (Cullinane College); James Tofa (Horowhenua-Kapiti Colleges); Luke Cody (Roncalli College); Marco Molo (SPC Old Boys Association Barbarians); Fredrich Keil (St Bernard's College); Matthew Vocea, Brodie Flannery (St Kevin’s College ); Vern Sosefo, Daniel Schrivers, Salesi Rayasi (St Patrick's College Silverstream); Saia Paese, Hannon Brigehouse (St Patrick's College, Wellington); Malo Tautalafua, Johnny van der Velde (St Thomas of Canterbury College).
