Upper Hutt Rams' Murphy Taramai here in action in October 2014 playing for the Wellington 7s team.
Part of a bruising Upper Hutt Rams loose forward trio that was instrumental in helping the newly amalgamated club to fourth in the Swindale Shield and fifth in the Jubilee Cup in 2014, it's in the Sevens arena where Taramai's star is rising fastest.
The former schoolboy rugby league star for Upper Hutt College (2010) and Penrith Panthers Rugby League trialist returned to New Zealand in 2012 and plied his trade in the Colts grade for Upper Hutt. He then burst on to the local Sevens stage with a Player of the Tournament performance at their home leg of the American Ambassador Sevens series in October 2012. He became a Wellington Wider Sevens Squad member.?
In 2013 he became a regular in the Wellington Sevens team and then helped Wellington win the National Sevens title in Rotorua in January 2014.
Big and powerful with the speed and skill-set to match, Taramai has the attributes to progress far. This was recognised by the NZ selectors in November 2014 and he was named in the All Black Sevens contracted squad for the first time.?
