Experienced Petone hooker Eugene Smith has been selected in the Wellington Lions squad for 2013. No stranger to top level rugby, Smith played in the Lions' famous 20-0 win over Auckland in 2008 when they lifted the Ranfurly Shield.
Previously, After a stint in Germany, Eugene Smith made his return to the Petone Premiers in the 2012 Jubilee Cup.
Former Petone Smith captain has played well over 100 caps for his club. Smith's Premier debut at the start of 2001 was also his Wellington club rugby debut after captaining the Wanganui Collegiate first XV in 2000.
Other achievements for Petone have been winning the Swindale Shield in 2004 - in his first stint as captain (lock Chris Molenaar led the side in 2005 and 2006) beating Northern United 20-18 in the 2005 Jubilee Cup final. Smith's brother Corey played over 50 games at fullback for Petone before moving to Seville in Spain.
He was been a regular in Wellington representative sides, making the Wellington U19s in 2001, the Wellington Colts in 2003, the Wellington Bs in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, two Wellington XV appearances in 2005 and 2006 and for Wellington Maori when not involved with the Bs.
