Silverware to be decided on super Saturday of club rugby
An eventful first round of Wellington club rugby culminates this Queen's Birthday weekend. Will Tawa secure the solitary bonus point they need to lift the Swindale Shield (pictured above) on their own? Can Poneke secure at least a draw against Old Boys University and make it through to the Jubilee Cup round ahead of Northern United? What will happen at the Polo Ground on Oriental-Rongotai's 125th anniversary weekend? By Saturday evening Wellington club rugby fans will know the answer to these questions - as well as who the winners of the Senior 1 Harper Lock Shield, Senior 2 National Mutual Cup and U21 Paris Memorial Cup competitions are...More
TJ Perenara: rapid rise to the dream
Above: TJ Perenara? playing for Norths against Wainuiomata, about to be tackled by former Hurricane and Wellington Lions teammate Frae Wilson and with Lions flanker Dean Brunsdon in support on his left shoulder. A little over a year ago TJ Perenara suffered a serious ankle injury which ruled him out of the game for the next six months. The young halfback was playing some of the best quality rugby seen around the country until his 2012 season was cruelly cut short. Many believed he was an end of year tour shoe-in with the All Blacks but those dreams were put on hold for the time being...More
Elevate+ Player Spotlight: Tauasosi Tuimavave Poneke
Poneke's wing/fullback Tauasosi (Sosi) Tuimavave hit the headlines earlier this season after scoring 50 points in a Swindale Shield match against Rimutaka in just his third ever Premier appearance. Tuimavave nailed 10 conversions and crossed for six tries to score almost half his team's points in the one-sided win. His quick footwork and eye for a gap, as well as his sharp kicking game, has impressed in several further performances at the back for the red and blacks, who this coming weekend face a tough battle against Old Boys University at Nairnville Park...More
Tawa celebrate maiden Swindale Shield, while Northern United face the drop
Above: Leading the charge. OBU fullback Jesse Johnson sets off on a run with teammates in tow in OBU's 63-28 over Petone. As well as discovering some hot form of late, the Billy Goats are safely through to this year's Jubilee Cup after finishing ninth in both 2011 and 2012. Tawa have won the Swindale Shield for the first time in the club's history. But they must wait a week to find out if it's theirs alone or whether they will have to share it with Oriental-Rongotai after failing to win with a bonus point in a lively tenth round fixture against defending first round champions Hutt Old Boys Marist today...More
Significant penultimate round in store for Wellington club rugby
Above: Try time in last week's Upper Hutt - Wests match. Every point will be crucial in this week's 10th round of the Swindale Shield The 2013 Swindale Shield could be decided this Saturday at the Hutt Recreation Ground when visitors Tawa take on defending first round champions Hutt Old Boys Marist in their penultimate round top of the table clash. If Tawa win with a bonus point they will claim the Swindale Shield outright with next week's final set of matches to spare. However, should HOBM topple Tawa then it's likely the title race will come down to a three-way battle in round 11 between this pair and third placed Ories...More

Elevate+ Player Spotlight: The Koroi brothers Tawa
Above: The Koroi brothers, Taniela (left) and Joketani, on the burst for Tawa. Photos by Jun Tanlayco Brothers Taniela and Joketani Koroi have both been in striking form for the Tawa Premiers this year and together are a major reason why Tawa enter this coming weekend's penultimate round of Swindale Shield matches with a five point lead to their nearest rival Hutt Old Boys Marist. If they beat the defending first round champions HOBM in this week's feature match with a bonus point they will win the Swindale Shield for the first time in the club's history...More
Swindale Shield set to go down to the wire after tight ninth round
Above: Injured Hurricanes players and supporters alike watch on as Ories wing Afa Fa'atau makes a break against Norths. Fa'atau was in the thick of his side's big win over Norths. Ories scored five tries and 35 points in the second half to win the match 50-19. Upsets, blowouts and high drama. Today's ninth round of Wellington Premier Swindale Shield club rugby had it all. And afterwards we're still no closer to confirming a title winner in a fortnight's time nor the make-up of the top eight for the Jubilee Cup...More
Crunch time in round nine this weekend
?For several teams, this Saturday's ninth round set of Wellington club rugby Premier ?Swindale Shield, Senior 1 Harper Lock Shield and Senior 2 National Mutual Cup matches will be vital to their seasons. In all three competitions there's key battles all the way up and down the points tables and few teams are immune to the outcomes of other matches and how they will affect their chances of winning one of the first round titles or deciding their fates for the second round. There's 15 competition points up for grabs for each side in each competition over the final three rounds...More
Mark Reddish Team Player: Reliable and Relentless
Above: Head down and going forward: Mark Reddish gives it his all for Ories in last year's Jubilee Cup final against MSP in horrendous conditions in August. The Reddish family has had a long and prosperous affiliation with the Oriental-Rongotai club and Mark, the Hurricane, is no different. His father, like so many players, introduced his two sons, Mark and Dan, into the game at an early age and neither has looked back since. "My old man is a big club man at Ories and took my family along so I put my boots on at a young age and played right through...More
