Swindale Shield round two: Wellington club rugby fans were kept on their edge of their seats on Saturday in a tightly fought second round set of Swindale Shield matches played, in fine and blustery conditions. A series of competitive games made for tense finishes in four of the six matches, including one draw and two that went right down to the wire. After two rounds there are four unbeaten teams led by Petone and Poneke who each have one bonus point win from their opening two encounters. There was a 10-10 draw at Nairnville Park between the Wests Roosters and Old Boys-University where, for the second week in a row, the Roosters were pipped for valuable competition points at the death...

In two mouthwatering early season Swindale Shield encounters, four of this year's favoured teams are in action against each other in this weekend's second round. In a repeat of last year's Jubilee Cup semi-finals, big first round winners Petone Randwick Meats host Northern United at the Petone Recreation Ground and Marist St. Pat's and Poneke square off at Evans Bay Park in one of Wellington club rugby's keenest rivalries. ?Both these games promise to be mighty clashes, given the results of last weekend's first round set of Swindale Shield matches, of last year's Jubilee Cup playoffs and the terrifically close recent history of results between these teams...

This year's Jubilee Cup final pits the best performing Wellington Premier team of the last three decades against the top team of the last five years. Today Marist St. Pat's will be gunning for their 12th Jubilee Cup in the last 30 years since they won their first in 1978. That would give them a winning strike-rate of one every 2.5 years, a record in Wellington club rugby comparable with the all-conquering Ian Upston-coached Petone teams of the late 1960s and 1970s. But the Red Machine hasn't won the coveted Jubilee Cup for six years when they beat Old Boys-University in the 2002 final, despite making two finals since in 2003 and 2007...
