Convincing performances by Upper Hutt and Oriental-Rongotai and the continued ascendancy of Wainuiomata were the highlights of a heavy-ground affected round four of the Hardham Cup. Upper Hutt trounced Northern United 66-7 at Maidstone Park and Ories comfortably dispatched struggling Johnsonville 36-3 at the Polo Ground. Upper Hutt and Ories both are shaping as the teams to beat as the business end of the season approaches. But it is Wainuiomata who continue to lead the standings after they enjoyed another bonus win against Hutt Old Boys Marist 32-18 at Mary Crowther Park in Wainuiomata...

The involvement of several Hurricanes players and All Blacks Ma’a Nonu, Piri Weepu and Chris Masoe in last week’s round of Wellington club rugby certainly brought an extra level of intensity into the Jubilee and Hardham Cup competitions. But the likely absence of the All Blacks, and the Vodafone Wellington Lions players to the Air New Zealand Cup, until at least finals day, won’t diminish either of the competitions. After just three rounds, both the Hardham and Jubilee Cups are finely balanced and both look set to go down to the wire over the final month of round-robin rugby...

After just three rounds, both the Hardham and Jubilee Cups are finely balanced and both look set to go down to the wire over the final month of round-robin rugby. It’s crunch time this weekend for several sides for their respective semi-final chances, and in the case of the Hardham Cup, the threat of relegation next year. For winless Tawa and Marist St. Pats in the Jubilee Cup, week four is a must win round for their semi-final chances, whilst in the Hardham Cup the rise of Wainuiomata is adding pressure on the other competing clubs, not just for their playoff hopes but for their survival in the Swindale Shield next year...

As well as scoring two tries himself in Wainuiomata's eight tries to nil rout of the Harper Lock Shield champions, he also kicked five conversions and a penalty. Wainuiomata's third win sees them leading the points table, ahead of Oriental-Rongotai in second...

Poneke will be hoping for more benign conditions at Fraser Park when they tackle Avalon in this week's Club Weekly feature match. Conditions were dire at Kilbirnie Park last week when they scraped out a 17-6 win over defending champions Petone. But for the Red and Blacks, who had previously suffered four defeats in a row, it was a win and four competition points in the bag. Avalon also registered a crucial first win by beating Tawa 28-5 last week, so both sides head into this clash in a similar position...

Upper Hutt and Western Suburbs clash at Ian Galloway Park in this week's feature Hardham Cup clash. After losing their opening round match to fellow Swindale Shield side Oriental-Rongotai, the pressure will be on Upper Hutt to beat Wests this week and also topple Johnsonville at Helston Park in round five. With surprise package Wainuiomata also in the mix, every game is important from now for the top teams. Wainuiomata, who beat Johnsonville last week only need to finish ahead of any of the existing premier teams to make the Swindale Shield in 2007...

Wainuiomata made a giant step towards regaining their premier status in 2007 when they toppled Johnsonville 13-11 in the notable second round result of the Hardham Cup. Wainuiomata fully deserved their victory in front of a sparse Helston Park crowd, dominating both territory and possession and leading throughout on the scoreboard. The decisive moment of the game came towards the end of the first half when Wainuiomata first five-eighth Earl Va'a crossed for his side's one and only try, giving them a 13-5 lead, after lock Jarred Beyer had kicked two early penalties...
